Classic Campers: Del-Rey Tri-Level Sky Lounge and Kamp King demonstrating the strength of their camper’s construction

Once again, we’re taking a turn off the interstate of multi-tasking, no time to smell the roses madness, to the old two lane highway of yesteryear Smile

This time visit is fairly short and sweet, namely another of the amazing pieces of Truck Camper engineering that came out during the 60s and 70s when Americans had gotten the RVing bug bad, the Del-Rey Tri-Level Sky Longue Truck Camper.

1964DelRey

Very little information exists on these mammoth and amazing forgotten truck campers, at current, I only have this one brochure page and this photo below.

69crew

I did have a link to an ad for one, but I failed to store any of the pictures of the inside of this old girl before the Craigslist ad expired.

So, I’m going to try and summarize this unit as best as I can.  The Sky Lounge was another of the truck camper models that had a set of seats in the front of the cab over for passengers to ride and view the road going by, this was counted as Level 2, the first level being the main kitchen and living area in the bed of the truck.

The third level comes in as you can see in the brochure where there’s a raised platform behind the seats for the extra bed, which is actually located at level with the roof over the main living area, so you’re actually sleeping above the kitchen, giving you the extra space for a third bed in a time before slide outs.

So, if you ever see one of these rigs up for grabs, get it and preserve it, there’s just so few of these amazing marvels left anymore.

Now, before we close this topic, I promised to add a little more in on my ever growing collection of memorabilia pertaining to the Kamp King truck camper line from McNamee Coach Corp.

Like a lot of truck camper manufacturers over the years, many of the greats (a lot of whom are only memories, now) have demonstrated the true ruggedness of their units using some amazing feat of excessive load or strain.

Six-Pac did it by placing a dually one ton pickup truck with an 8’ six-pac camper in it’s bed on the roof of one of their big truck campers (which they don’t make anymore).

McNamee did something similar with their Kamp King, they placed everyone from the shop on the roof of one of their campers Smile.

  1. I just love that picture of the Del Ray and the Dodge Camper Special -- I have a truck similar (1968) and the picture of something like it with the Del Ray is just awesome. Would love to own one of course. Thansk so much for putting the effort into posting it here. --kevinh

    1. Not a problem, I try to keep track of all the old Classic Campers, one thing I will be doing is driving past the old KIT Factory in Caldwell, ID, where my camper was born.

The company stayed around, though under a different name, until 2008 when they finally folded.

    4. I've had campers for 43 years and never seen the Del Rey tri-level before last week. Like an RV mirage in the remote desert--one appeared.
But, alas, it was an abandoned derelict. I would like a nice one, if you could help?

  6. I bought one last year, and sold it to a friend. He has never done anything with it, so I'm buying it back from him next week. It's just too wet to get it out of his yard right now. I believe it's the Imperial model. My friends called it the SS Minnow when it was at my house before.

  8. My father owns a Kamp King just like the one in the photo above. He is considering selling it. We were considering getting it appraised. It was interesting to read that McNamee petitioned Ford, and other truck companies, to build a special truck (Ford camper special), which my dad also has, in order to withstand the weight of the vehicle. We have fond memories of sitting up in the second level while driving thru Yosemite in the summers.

  9. I happened to come across this blog purely by accident, but am I glad I did. For years, I would tell people about a camper that slid onto the back of a pickup truck that had seats over the cab for the people to view the road while traveling. I was often told there was no such animal. Of course, back then, there was no internet, so I could not prove my claim. Thanks for posting this.

  13. We had a Del-Ray Sky Lounge on a1965 Chevy camper special, only thing was it had a side door on the rear right instead of the normal rear door. Dad did not like the rear due to having us kids in the camper going down the road.

  15. My Father owned a ` 1961 Tri Level Del Rey camper he purchased used in 1963. He first hauled it on a 1960 Chevy C-10 half ton pickup he beefed up with overload springs and 6 ply tires with split rims.. Being 2,000 pounds empty, it was a tough load for the 6 cylinder 3 speed 1/2 ton pickup. In 1965 Dad purchased a 1965 283 cubic inch 4 speed Chevy that hauled the camper no problem. Then Dad purchased a new 1972 350 cubic inch V-8 Chevy C-20 with power steering and brakes that hauled the camper - no problem. The family still owns that pick up.
